"LAS BOMBAS DE FANNY Y JAVIER": Field recordings of a street musician from Quito, Ecuador

I just returned from about 4 months in Ecuador. For the past month and a half or so (April, 2010) I have been working with a street musician from the historic center of Quito, Ecuador. His name is Javier Espinosa and he sings and plays mostly mosaics (collages of songs you would hear on the radio) of bombas and salsas that he has constructed himself, with a drum he has made out of a barrel and some cuero de vaca (cow skin).. He survives by playing music for people while they eat in restaurants, as well as collaborating with theater groups in parks, and asking for donations.

I worked with Javier and his cousin Fanny for a little over a month, documenting their day-to-day reality, compiling approximately 160 minutes of recordings, and making about 70 copies of a CD of his material with artwork and photos for him to sell and have another small source of income. Below is the link to download the record we made (12 tracks, 70 minutes). Please contact me if you would be interested in learning more about Javier, hearing more recordings, writing a review or receiving a physical copy of this disc.
